You can play Left 4 Dead 2 for free right now, but you’ve not got long

Left 4 Dead 2 is still easily one of the best co-op FPS games you can play today. With the witty character banter, the invisible ‘Director’ AI who keeps every wave of zombies feeling fresh, and the ease at which you can jump into the action, L4D2 stands tall all these years later. So if it’s been a few years and you fancy diving back in, or if you’ve never played a Left 4 Dead game and want to experience it for yourself, now’s your chance. You can play Left 4 Dead 2 for free on Steam for a limited time, and grab it at a significant discount afterward.

I can’t argue with one of the best PC games of all time being free, even if it’s only for a limited time. Left 4 Dead 2 sits alongside other Valve FPS games like Half-Life and Portal as a quintessential experience for anyone with a mouse and keyboard, despite its age. The first time you startle a Witch, alert the horde, and face off against a Tank will all be etched into your memory forever, especially if you take them all on with friends.

Valve has already made it clear that Left 4 Dead 3 is “absolutely not” in development, so booting up L4D2 after all these years is the next best thing. Now’s even the perfect time to play, with the playercount peaking at around 50,000 during the free weekend. You can play co-op with friends, test your mettle as one of the special infected in the versus mode, or hold out for as long as possible in survival.

L4D2 isn’t the only Valve game celebrating a birthday right now, with Half-Life 2’s 20th anniversary also happening. To celebrate, Half-Life 2 is free to keep for a limited time, with a colossal update that includes developer commentary, visual improvements, and a documentary teasing what happened to HL3 Episode 3.

As for all those apparent Left 4 Dead 3 leaks, a former Valve developer finally put that talk to rest last year. Ex-Valve writer Chet Faliszek says the developer often used Left 4 Dead as a “testbed” for other ideas, and suggests that players digging into files and finding these projects might be where talk of a sequel keeps coming from.

Left 4 Dead 2 is free to play until Monday November 18 on Steam, with a sale dropping the game’s price by 80% until then, so expect to pay $2 / £1.70. You can get involved right here.

If Valve’s zombie shooter isn’t enough for you we’ve also got all the best games like Left 4 Dead, and the co-op games you need to check out as well.
