Xbox launches new strike system for bans and suspensions

The new strike system is “similar to demerit strikes used in driver’s license systems in many countries.” When a player violates the Xbox Community Standards, they will now receive a strike — or sometimes multiple strikes, depending on how severe the violation was — against their account. Xbox introduces new enforcement strike systemEach strike carries a penalty. If you receive one strike, you will be suspended from services like online multiplayer and voice chat for a day, while four strikes will result in a seven-day suspension, and so on. Hitting the maximum of eight strikes will see you suspended for a full year. Xbox says all players will start on a clean state (previous enforcements such as suspensions must still be completed), and strikes will stay on record for six months.Strike Suspension length1 1 day2 1 day 3 3 days4 7 days5 14 days6 21 days7 60 days8365 daysAccounts that reach a total of eight strikes and do get suspended will still have access to single-player experiences and their purchased accounts. However, Xbox says that for the most serious violations, including illegal activity, Xbox can still permanently suspend an account, including access to purchased games. Players will also be able to appeal against eligible enforcements, and if successful, the strike will be removed. Xbox also notes that when a player reports another player for violating the Xbox Community Standards, “all reports are evaluated, there are no automated enforcement actions based solely on the fact that a report was made. No volume of inaccurate reports results in an enforcement. Only reports that have been reviewed by the Xbox Safety Team and determined to be accurate result in an enforcement.” According to Dave McCarthy, CVP Xbox player services, the new system “gives players a better understanding of enforcement severity and the cumulative effect of multiple enforcements. Enforcement transparency is about giving players clarity into how their behavior impacts their experience. Our content moderation efforts are not changing as a result of the new enforcement strike system.”Last month, Xbox rolled out a new voice reporting feature that allows players to capture clips of “inappropriate voice activity.”
