Wuthering Waves Steam launch is set, as combat-led Genshin Impact rival expands

Developer Kuro Games has confirmed that the Wuthering Waves Steam launch is coming soon. The gacha game, a flashy sci-fi adventure with a combat focus that stands among the strongest challengers to Genshin Impact and HoYoverse’s crown, will land on the Valve platform in April as a free Steam game. The new version will be compatible with other devices including the standalone, PS5, and mobile versions, so it’s ideal whether you’re an existing player wanting to consolidate your installs or a complete newcomer.

Having just revealed its latest update, Wuthering Waves 2.2, which arrives Thursday March 27, Kuro Games confirms that it will be bringing the gacha game to Steam just one month later. If you’re not yet familiar with WuWa, as it’s often known by players, it boasts a stunning open world (with the recent 2.0 update taking us to a whole-new region) and thrives in its combat, which draws inspiration from the likes of Devil May Cry and Dark Souls to present more dynamic action that rewards skilled play.

As someone who’s more inclined towards Zenless Zone Zero than Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves matches its more action-led combat while still maintaining the open-world exploration of Genshin that ZZZ leaves behind. Combined with its excellent character design, this has made it the standout contender to the HoYoverse roster, holding my attention where I’ve slipped away from others over time, and the WuWa Steam release means one fewer standalone launcher to keep track of.

There’s a wealth of playable characters with unique combat styles (known as ‘Resonators’) that are primarily unlocked through Wuthering Waves banners. This uses currency that can be earned in-game or bought with real money. If you’re familiar with the gacha format, you’ll know what to expect – it’s fairly reasonable to collect a handful of characters by playing for free as long as you pick and choose who you go for carefully, but you’re in for plenty of grinding if you want to earn the materials to max out their abilities and equipment.

Much like the standalone version, it’s expected that Wuthering Waves will be a free Steam game when it arrives. The April launch will likely be a good time to get started, too – we’re still relatively early in the anime game’s life, meaning you shouldn’t have much trouble catching up to the crowd. But we’re far enough beyond launch (and even the 2.0 patch) that the game has grown past a lot of its early teething troubles and only continues to improve.

Wuthering Waves will be released on Steam Friday April 28 / Saturday April 29, depending on your region. You can download and play the game for free. Wishlist it now if you want to be reminded when the Wuthering Waves Steam release date arrives.

If you’re planning to play, you may want to take advantage of the latest Wuthering Waves codes right now to grab a few extra materials ahead of time. Then, take a scroll through our Wuthering Waves tier list to help you decide which characters to keep an eye out for.
