Worship is like a far grimmer, weirder Cult of the Lamb you can play now

Cult of the Lamb has been one of the biggest indie smashes of recent years so it’s no surprise that we’d begin to see more titles explore cults, even though they’ve been fertile ground for gaming for a long time. Games like Worshippers of Cthulhu, The Shrouded Isle, and Honey, I Joined a Cult have looked into cults in their own way, but if you’re looking for another newcomer then the upcoming Worship looks like it might be exactly what you’ve been searching for. What’s more, it has a demo you can try out in advance of the game’s full launch.

In Worship you’re tasked with bringing about the end of the world, as all good cults should do. In order to get the apocalypse started on behalf of your eldritch deity you’ll need to recruit hapless pawns – sorry, I mean a flock of the faithful – and use them to further your aims. Pikmin-style, you’ll command them to perform tasks, undertake rituals, and throw their lives on the fires of your god’s ambition.

Of course you can’t end the world without first controlling it, which is where some action RPG aspects come in. You’ll need to explore far and wide, slaying enemies, casting spells and enhancing your dark lord’s power in order to insidiously bring everyone into your faith. Unlike some titles, there’s no pretense here about what side you’re on. You work on the side of evil, so you’ll be performing plenty of foul acts as you spill blood for your master.

What’s most compelling about Worship, apart from its integration of four player co-op, is its style. Coming across like a cross between Grim Fandango and something like Minit, Worship has a stark appearance that nevertheless manages to be full of life. At least, until you put those lives to an end, anyway.

Worship has no launch date yet but you can play its demo over on Steam right now. Head over to the game’s store page to learn more, and to check it out for yourself.
