After seeing Thursday night’s game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees postponed due to COVID-19, Friday’s game between the AL East rivals is still on as players await testing results.
The standalone game on Thursday night was postponed shortly after Yankees batting practice was canceled. All-Star right fielder Aaron Judge was among six Yankees who tested positive for the coronavirus. Two Yankees players and five Red Sox players were deemed as close contacts to Judge from their time at the 2021 MLB All-Star Game in Denver and are awaiting their test results.
As of now, the game is still on for Friday night, but it remains a fluid situation for all involved here.

Boston enters the second half of the season in first place in the AL East with a 55-36 record. The Red Sox have a 1.5-game lead over the second place Tampa Bay Rays and an eight-game lead over the Yankees who are tied for third place with the Toronto Blue Jays in the divisional race. New York massively underachieved in the first half and are only barely above .500 with a 46-43 record.
Given that these teams are division rivals, any postponements are more likely to be rescheduled than a series between two teams who rarely play each other. Either way, New York has to figure out fast if the Yankees are going to be buyers or sellers as the trade deadline approaches. Boston is in the mix to win the AL pennant, so you better believe the Red Sox will be buyers this July.
