Persona is one of the premier JRPG franchises in the world now. And the latest remake of the classic Persona game – Persona 3 Reload – ticks all of the boxes for a classic JRPG experience. If you are new to the genre or Persona games in general, then you might be wondering which difficulty you should start the game with. Worry not, as this article will guide you through how to choose the right difficulty for your playthrough of Persona 3 Reload. Let’s get started!

How Many Difficulty Options are there in Persona 3 Reload?

Persona 3 Reload: Which Difficulty is Right For You?

There are a total of 5 difficulty options available to players in Persona 3 Reload. They are – peaceful, easy, normal, hard, and merciless. Here’s a breakdown of all the difficulty levels to give you an idea if it would be a good choice for you.

  • Peaceful – This is the easiest mode in the game and will allow you to enjoy the full story of Persona 3 Reload without any tough fights getting in the way.
  • Easy – This mode is primarily for casual players who are familiar with how JRPG games work.
  • Normal – The normal mode is a well-balanced option that will provide you with a challenge without making the game too difficult to go through.
  • Hard – This mode will test your ability to strategize in the middle of combat and will expect you to know the core mechanics of the game.
  • Merciless – This mode is for advanced/expert players who have played Persona games in the past and are looking for a challenge to overcome.

The story will remain unaffected regardless of which difficulty you choose. Moreover, if you want to get all of the trophies and achievements, you don’t need to worry about playing the game with any particular difficulty. So, you are free to enjoy the game however you like.

Can You Change the Difficulty Level in Persona 3 Reload?

Yes, Persona 3 Reload also gives you the option to change your difficulty level mid-game. So, if you feel like your chosen difficulty setting is too much for you to handle, then you can turn it down. On the other hand, if you think that the game is too easy, then you also have the option to crank up the difficulty as well.

There is a catch though. If you start the game on Merciless and then decide to turn down the difficulty, you won’t be able to return to the same difficulty afterward. Let’s say, for instance, you turned down your difficulty setting from Merciless to Normal, then you will only be able to turn up the difficulty to Hard. You will be completely locked out of the Merciless difficulty option unless you start a New Game.

An In-depth Look at Persona 3 Reload Difficulty Options

Having trouble figuring out which difficulty setting would be best to start with in Persona 3 Reload? Here’s everything that you need to know about the challenge each difficulty option provides:

You can choose the Peaceful difficulty option if you want to just enjoy the story of Persona 3 Reload without having to worry about coming across a tough enemy or boss. This difficulty setting makes the entire game a breeze to play through and poses virtually no challenge to the player. While it may seem intriguing to new players, we would not recommend this option as it trivializes the game’s captivating combat system.

If you are a new player, then we would recommend going for Easy as the bare minimum. This mode will let newcomers learn the game’s combat mechanics at their own pace without feeling like they are being tested at every turn. Additionally, players who decide to play on Normal mode can also turn their difficulty down to Easy if they come across any particularly annoying bosses.

The Normal difficulty setting provides a very well-balanced experience for players of all skill levels. The game will test you to see if you have understood its mechanics and combat system. In our opinion, this is the best option to start Persona 3 Reload with as you can use this difficulty setting to gauge how much you can take. If it proves to be too overwhelming, then you can turn the difficulty down and vice versa.

Hard mode is for players who have played Persona games in the past or have at least played the original Persona 3. However, this setting will turn up the heat quite a bit and will expect you to use everything in your arsenal to make progress. That means players need to be adept at strategizing on the fly and be willing to overcome difficult obstacles.

We would not recommend Merciless mode unless you have already played and beat the game at least once. This difficulty setting is primarily for veterans of the franchise who love to challenge their skills and expertise. However, you can change it to lower the difficulty if it seems too much for you. But do note that you won’t be able to turn the game back up to Merciless unless you start a New Game.

Which Difficulty is Right For You?

After carefully going over all of the different difficulty settings in Persona 3 Reload, we believe that the best mode for most players is going to be the Normal mode. This is the optimal way to play and enjoy the game, even if you are a newcomer to the series. The game will teach you its core mechanics and then test you on how well you have learned them. And if you fail, you can always try again or lower the difficulty to a setting you like.
