Fortnite is a huge force in modern gaming, but it hasn’t always been here. The answer to when did Fortnite come out can be easy to forget with everything that’s happened over Four Chapters!
When did Fortnite come out? The Battle Royale has managed to blow through 4 Chapters, tons of seasons, and a crazy number of massive changes to its gameplay. Although, it might surprise you when all of the Fortnite start and end dates have been. If you’re wondering when was Fortnite made or when did Fortnite come out, then this is what you need to know.
When Did Fortnite Come Out?
Fortnite Battle Royale was first released in September 26 2017! Although, that isn’t quite the full answer to when did Fortnite come out. For a start, Battle Royale isn’t even the original Fortnite game. Then on top of that, we’ve got to consider Season 0 and how long Fortnite took to become the game we know today.
The Battle Royale mode was originally released in September as an extension of the tower defence game, now retitled Fortnite Save the World. However, that game came out a bit earlier, predating the now more popular Battle Royale.
These are the Fortnite release dates, but if you want to get technical the game was still in an open beta. The game was in an early testing period for fans before the title actually officially released. Everyone’s likely familiar with how ridiculous the early access label for Fortnite eventually became, but if we’re going by strict definitions the answer to when was Fortnite made isn’t until early access ended, in June 29 2020.
It’s not really fair to consider the early access of Fortnite the same as the trials for games like Diablo 4. It was a pretty strange label for a title in its second Chapter.
Battle Royale Vs Save the World – When Did Fortnite Come Out in Full?
When did Fortnite come out is a question which you can probably assume is talking about Battle Royale. However, the actual Fortnite game was originally Save the World. It wasn’t until Battle Royale gained so much popularity that it really replaced Save the Word. The original Fortnite game has a different release date.
If you’re wondering when did Fortnite come out fully, the Save the World game was first released on July 25 2017. It was a few months later before it expanded to include Battle Royale too. Then Creative, Ranked, eventually UnrealFN, and according to Fortnite leaks, a full racing mode is coming soon too.
Like with Battle Royale, the answer to when Did Fortnite come out for Save the World also has to have caveats for it being in Early Access. This was essentially the release date though.
When Was Fortnite Made?
Fortnite was originally made over a few years going into 2017. The game launched in Early Access, which meant it was still in development on release. The game had some pretty different plans before it came out, including differing mechanics entirely. Even Battle Royale was made gradually. A lot of players want to go back to the OG Fortnite map, but it’s developed a lot over the years and the Season 1 style of gameplay is very different to what we have now.
When did Fortnite come out is a single release date, but a lot of what players love about the game wasn’t added until later.
Fortnite is now made a few seasons ahead of time. We know Epic is already actively working on Chapter 5 and beyond. We’ve seen this longer schedule cause some problems in the past too. Chapter 3 Season 2 was war themed, developed a year before release, and happened to come out right a high-profile real-world war started. Epic changed the subtitle to Resistance and downplayed the War aspect, but the marketing for the early season was a little strange. While bugs can take a while to get fixed, we know Epic is actively making Fortnite content for the next few years.
