The start of the Ohio State football season was a little more nervous than expected after Minnesota gave the Buckeyes a scare. What did Ryan Day take away?

Very few college football teams go through a season without dealing with growing pains. The Ohio State football team is no exception.

They opened their season with a road game against Minnesota on Thursday night and spent a surprising amount of time playing from behind.

Ryan Day post game: Buckeyes head coach stresses the positives

For head coach Ryan Day, the important thing is how they fought back for a 45-31 victory.

“Early on to get a test like this to show some grit against adversity is going to go a long way this season,” Day said after the game.

Day pointed out all the things that went into making the game uncomfortable. The Buckeyes were on the road against a conference foe. It was the first game of the season. There was a tough of rain. His first-time starter at quarterback had a rough start.

Those things will no doubt concern Ohio State fans. The early struggles will have the Oregon Ducks, the Buckeyes’ Week 2 opponent, licking their lips.

Even so, Day and his staff are right to look at the bright side. They won by two touchdowns even with their struggles. They proved to C.J. Stroud that a bad first half doesn’t have to spell doom. He ended up throwing four touchdowns in the end.

If the Buckeyes want to compete for a national title, they’ll need to make it through more of these kinds of tests before the season is over. They just need to prove they’ve learned from this one.
