Week 30 in review: Nokia XR20, Huawei P50 series official

Another week down, so let’s recap it. This was an announcement-filled one, starting with the rugged Nokia XR20, which focuses on longevity. It’s water, dust and drop proof, has Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and a heavy duty case-like back, and it comes with four years of security updates. The Nokia XR20 starts selling for $550 on August 24.

Nokia also brought the C30 and 6310 alongside a couple of TWS earbuds.

Huawei finally introduced its P50 series. Consisting of only the vanilla P50 and the P50 Pro (no Pro+ this time), the pair are 4G-only, come with either a Kirin 9000 or a Snapdragon 888, and both have periscope cameras, albeit of different specs.

The P50 Pro has a curved 120Hz AMOLED, 64MP periscope of 90mm focal length (around 3.9x), 13mm ultrawide and 40MP black and white camera. The P50 has a flat 90Hz AMOLED, 12MP 125mm periscope and 16mm ultrawide. Both phones have a 50MP main camera. The P50 Pro has a bigger 4,360mAh battery, over the P50’s 4,100mAh.

The Huawei P50 Pro will go on sale in China on August 12, starting at CNY 6,000 ($930/€780 for the SD888 8/128GB model. The P50 is coming in September for CNY 4,500 ($700/€590) with 8/128GB. Word is still out on international availability.

ZTE unveiled the Axon 30 5G with the much-anticipated second-gen under display camera. The 16MP UD camera and display area above it have been completely reworked featuring rearranged pixels with higher transparency cathodes. ZTE doubled the ppi count above the camera module to 400ppi up from 200ppi on the Axon 20. The Axon 30 5G brings a Snapdragon 870 and will go on sale on August 3 with a starting price of CNY 2,198 ($338) for the 6/128GB model.

A trio of new Motorola phones was announced with the Edge 20 Pro, Edge 20 and Edge 20 Lite. The Pro model brings a flagship specs sheet with its 6.7-inch OLED display of speedy 144Hz refresh rate, 108 main cam and 8MP periscope module with 5x optical zoom. The Edge 20 houses the same 144Hz OLED panel and 108MP main shooter but substitutes the periscope for an 8MP telephoto module with 3x optical zoom. Edge 20 Lite dials back to a 6.7-inch 90Hz OLED and 108MP main cam.

Pricing for the Motorola Edge 20 Pro starts at €699.99/£649.99. Edge 20 will go for €499.99/£429.99 while Edge 20 Lite will go for €349.99/£299.99. All three phones will be available later in August and will eventually make their way across Europe, Latin America and Asia.

The Poco X3 GT brought a Dimensity 1100 chipset, Gorilla Glass Victus and a 6.6-inch IPS LCD with a 120Hz refresh rate and FHD+ resolution. It will start at a suggested retail of $299 for the 8/128GB trim while the 8/256GB model will go for $329. It will be available across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa.

Oppo announced the Reno6 4G with a Snapdragon 720G and a 44MP selfie camera. The device is on sale in Indonesia.

Samsung announced the OneUI 4.0 beta, based on Android 12 is coming to the Galaxy S21 series, but left out details when the first firmware will arrive.

Finally, Nothing unveiled the ear (1) with active noise cancellation, sweat resistance and wireless charging for $99 / €99 / £99 / INR 5,999. Our review here.

The rumors were right, there will be no One UI 3.5. The beta program for version 4.0 is starting in Korea.

Titanium is lighter and tougher than most metals.

It packs a 6.5″ LCD and sports a 48MP triple camera.

Triple cameras for all three phones but with different lenses and sensors.

The trio will be available later this month.

It’s a rebadge of the China-exclusive Redmi Note 10 Pro.

It’s already up for purchase in Indonesia.

The 6310 keeps the nostalgia train going, the C30 is the new king of the entry-level.

Xiaomi is expanding its selection of smart home gadgets available in Europe. 

The current K40 Gaming Edition uses a Dimensity 1200.

The Tab S8 trio is expected in 11″, 12.4″ and 14.6″ sizes.

This will be an entry-level tablet with a 10-inch display.
