While all eyes fervently turn towards the likes of GTA 6, my mind is still very much on Warframe 1999. Since it was unveiled a year ago, it’s been lurking in my brain like the Infestation, rearing its head whenever a new trailer drops, then returning to its slumber. With the days ticking down and New Year’s Eve drawing ever closer, there’s a brand-new mode in the works that changes up the traditional action for something that’s “unlike anything Warframe has done before.”
I’ve been missing Höllvania, I won’t lie. I spent far too long chilling in the Central Mall Relay, and very much enjoyed my time with the Warframe 1999 demo – albeit a little too brief for my liking. The multiplayer game‘s new PvPvE mode will borrow the wartorn city as its backdrop, but instead of the traditional Warframe gameplay, you’re pitted against one another in a race for the crown.
This is Faceoff, a brand new mode that splits players into two teams of four (making eight players in total). You’ll spawn at opposite ends of the Höllvania map, and are tasked with competing various objectives for The Hex while simultaneously fighting of hordes of enemies. To me, it feels like a fusion of Assassination and Defense.
But there’s a little bit of Shrine Defense in there, too, as racking up a certain amount of points can either unlock Boosts for your team, or Hinderances for your enemies. Akin to most buff/debuff systems, these include things like raining missile strikes down on the opposing team, or guaranteeing you crit chance against all enemies.
To get into the spirit, Digital Extremes has also dropped a brand new track from 1999’s resident infected boyband, On-lyne, simply entitled ‘The Great Despair.’ Somewhat of a departure from Party of Your Lifetime, it was decoded by a collection of Warframe players using a series of cryptic messages, and honestly, that’s pretty damn cool.
Warframe’s new Faceoff mode will drop as part of Warframe 1999. The Warframe 1999 release date is still a mystery, but at least we know a little bit more about what lurks on the horizon.
In the meantime, however, make sure you tune into The Game Awards to pick up the latest round of Warframe Twitch drops, and perhaps get the answer to the ‘when does 1999 launch’ question that’s on all of our minds.
