Stockholm, Sweden off the charts. Valve searches for a new venue.

Valve has informed that despite their efforts, it has become impossible to conduct The International 10 in Stockholm, Sweden. As a result, the company is looking for alternatives.

“Over the course of the past year, Stockholm Live and Visit Stockholm continued to reassure us in our regular and constant communications with them that The International – Dota 2 Championships qualified for the same exemptions as other elite sporting events received there. However, despite previous reassurances, we were informed two weeks ago that the Swedish Sports Federation had just voted not to accept esports into the sports federation.”

After failed attempts to get anything from Stockholm Live and Visit Stockholm, Valve approached Sweden’s Minister to reclassify The International as a sporting event. However, the Minister denied their request. Valve also filed an appeal to the Swedish government on June 9 but has received no resolutions.

Valve has stated that it remains committed to hosting The International despite hindrances posed by the pandemic. It is a big surprise that the Swedish government fails to recognize the importance of a grand event like TI 10 and esports in general.

In some good news, Valve has confirmed that the TI qualifiers will take place as scheduled and that the developers will introduce a new event called “Nemestice” later this week.
