Speedbird Aero and Vale have successfully completed the first-ever drone logistics operation in Carajás Mine (the world’s largest iron ore mine, located in the state of Para in Northern Brazil). We successfully transported mineral samples between the mine and Vale’s laboratory, marking a groundbreaking step in the application of drone technology in the mining industry. The operation involved the Speedbird Aero DLV-2 E35 aircraft, which transported mineral samples over 42 km in just 45 minutes, significantly reducing the transport time compared to traditional road transport, which can take up to four hours due to weather and road conditions.
The DLV-2 E35, a 35 kg MTOW multi-rotor aircraft designed for extended range, flew at 500 meters above ground level to navigate the expansive valleys and hills of the region. Supported and coordinated by regulatory bodies including the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and the Department of Airspace Control (DECEA), the operation adhered to the highest safety standards.
The success of this mission was made possible through the advanced technology employed, coupled with the expertise, dedication, and close collaboration of the teams from Speedbird Aero and Vale. Together, they ensured the flawless execution of all processes, overcoming challenges and achieving exceptional efficiency and safety.
This pilot project represents a major milestone in the deployment of drones as a high-impact, innovative logistics solution for the mining industry and highlights the potential for further collaborations between Vale and Speedbird Aero.
