It’s been a little over a week since Microsoft and The Coalition announced Gears of War: E-Day at the Xbox Games Showcase, and it seems that the reveal has inspired players to either return to the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition achievements or attempt to unlock them for the first time. Since that announcement, the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition Xbox player count has spiked considerably, breathing new life into the Xbox exclusive. Xbox players are returning to the Gears of War franchise in drovesUsing a sample size of over 2.4 million Xbox accounts, our latest Xbox Gameplay Chart data (courtesy of GameInsights) shows Gears of War: Ultimate Edition saw a massive 323% rise in Xbox players in the week following the Gears of War: E-Day reveal. E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the events of the first Gears of War, so it’s not too surprising to see players jump back into the first game or play it for the first time to see what all the fuss is about. Naturally, this boost in players would have been helped by Xbox Game Pass and the accessibility it provides — those interested who may not have experienced a Gears game before can jump into the Ultimate Edition and every Gears game in the franchise as they’re included with a Game Pass subscription. However, it’s not just Gears of War: Ultimate Edition that has seen a resurgence in Xbox players following the E-Day announcement. While the Ultimate Edition didn’t quite make it onto this week’s chart, Gears 5 did manage to sneak in and claim 34th place. Our data shows a 66% spike in Xbox players for Gears 5 since the reveal. Additionally, Gears of War 4 saw a similar Xbox player increase of 64% over the same period. Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 have also seen an increase in players. Before the reveal, both games sat outside of the top 200 most-played Xbox games (we only collect gameplay data for the top 200), but this week, Gears of War 2 climbed all the way up to 121st position, while Gears of War 3 made it a little higher to 109th. For those wondering about the original Xbox 360 version of Gears of War, it did not chart in our top 200. Microsoft had its best Xbox Games Showcase in years during Summer Game Fest, and Gears of War: E-Day was one of the reasons why it had such a strong showing. When we asked TrueAchievements readers for their favorite reveal from the Xbox Games Showcase, Gears of War: E-Day came out on top with 11% of the vote, so it’s clear there is still a big appetite for a new Gears game, especially one that focuses on fan-favorite characters Marcus and Dom. With E-Day rumored for a 2025 launch, it will be interesting to see if players will continue dipping into older Gears games in the weeks and months ahead.Xbox Gameplay Chart data is compiled using data from over 2.4 million active Xbox accounts (not just TrueAchievements accounts). Chart information is copyright Game Insights. Regarding this data:When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week. Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
