Due to its online-only nature, players can no longer unlock The Crew achievements following the game’s server closure on March 31. The Xbox racing game is now unplayable on all platforms, and Ubisoft is being sued for shutting down The Crew by two Californian players who are using the state’s new law, which requires digital stores to make it clear you’re purchasing a license for a game and not buying it to own, as the basis for its proposed class action lawsuit.Ubisoft faces potential class action lawsuit over The Crew shutdown “Imagine you buy a pinball machine, and years later, you enter your den to go play it, only to discover that all the paddles are missing, the pinball and bumpers are gone, and the monitor that proudly displayed your unassailable high score is removed,” the lawsuit filed on November 4 reads. “Turns out the pinball manufacturer decided to come into your home, gut the insides of the pinball machine, and remove your ability to play the game that you bought and thought you owned.”The filing alleges (thanks, Polygon) that Ubisoft misled players into thinking they were buying the game instead of licensing it, both digitally and physically, and for “falsely” representing that The Crew’s game files were stored on the physical discs for players to access at any time and not just a key to access the online game. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiffs purchased physical copies of The Crew in 2018 and 2020 respectively, but neither player would have bought it “on the same terms” knowing the servers would be shut down in 2024, leaving the game unplayable. The lawsuit suggests that Californian consumer protection laws are being violated by Ubisoft, and the plaintiffs want the court to approve the lawsuit as a class action, allowing other players to join and seek compensation.Ubisoft suddenly delisted the Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of The Crew in December 2023, announcing that the game would remain playable for all owners of the game until March 31, 2024, after which the servers would be shut down. Unsurprisingly, many players weren’t happy with Ubisoft’s decision, especially those who champion game preservation. Although The Crew was left to its fate, Ubisoft has recently announced that offline modes will be added to The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest, so players can play safe in the knowledge that the games won’t just disappear randomly one day.
