Skull and Bones launches on Xbox Series X|S next week with a price tag of $70 for its standard edition. While it shows signs of having live service elements, Ubisoft insists that it’s a “fully-fledged game,” and even called it “quadruple-A.” Players looking to make their fortune during the Golden Age of Piracy in Skull and Bones will need to spend a pretty penny for the experience. Just the Standard Edition will set you back $70, while you’ll need to stump up $100 if you want the Premium Edition with its two extra missions, Smuggler Pass token for the premium battle pass, and a handful of cosmetic items. With the inclusion of a battle pass and the recently revealed four seasons of post-launch content for the game’s first year — which add new world events, season rewards, sea monsters, features, and more — it shows all the hallmarks of a live service title. Ubisoft insists that it’s a “fully-fledged game,” however, which is why it carries such a high price tag.During a Q+A portion of the company’s recent earnings call, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot was asked why the company is pricing Skull and Bones at $70 when a free-to-play model might work better for its live service elements, giving it a better chance to build a community instead of limiting its player base with a steep price tag. “You will see that Skull and Bones is a fully-fledged game,” Guillemot said. “It’s a very big game, and we feel that people will really see how vast and complete that game is. It’s a really full, triple-A, quadruple-A game, that will deliver in the long run.”If you’re interested in checking out the game for yourself, the Skull and Bones open beta is now live and will be running until Sunday, February 11.
