If you want an FPS with some real weight and grit to it, look no further than Trepang2. Taking influence from FEAR and the newer Doom games, but pushing against the latter’s raw power fantasy, it’s a shooter that leaves an impression, and you can get it for an absolute bargain right now.
The secret sauce to many of the best FPS games lies in their sound and feel. It’s the heft of the weapons as you shoot through enemies in a blur of bullets and bodies. Trepang2 is an action game that understands this implicitly, marking its guns with thunderous blasts that contribute to the terror of what’s happening around you.
As a corporate super-soldier tasked with taking down another tech company, you’re a harbinger of violence and brutality. The goal here is total annihilation, so the capitalist empire of your creation can further its stranglehold. Besides all the guns you can use, you’ve the power to slow time, alongside the requisite heightened strength and resistance to pain.
The backdrop is the kind of near-future-hellscape you’ll be familiar with if you know Blade Runner or RoboCop. All in all, the combination serves as a brutal contrast to the likes of Doom Eternal or Deathloop, in which all the chaos starts to weigh on you as you only become more efficient and relentless.
It came out in 2023, and although response has been good from those that played – currently Very Positive on Steam from over 9,000 reviews – it hasn’t gotten a lot of attention. If any of this sounds intriguing to you, there’s a free demo available too.
Trepang2 is on sale on Steam for 50% off, at £12.49/€14.99/$15.59. Have a look at our best new PC games and upcoming PC games lists for more hidden gems.
