The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Xbox players are failing to commit murder

Gun Interactive launched its asymmetrical horror game, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC in August to great success — aided no doubt by its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass. In our Texas Chain Saw Massacre review, we said that “the love for the IP is apparent everywhere you look,” and that goes right down to the cat-and-mouse murder mayhem you experience as both a Family member and a Victim. Yet, with so much brutality at its heart, the achievement data reveals that the majority of players on Xbox have been avoiding (or are just bad at) executing other players. Thanks to the console and PC versions having separate lists, we can see how players unlocking The Texas Chain Saw Massacre achievements and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Windows) achievements are faring. One of the earliest achievements you can unlock in the game is Welcome to the Family, which tasks you with executing your first Victim. Executions can only be performed by the three Family players (obviously), but you don’t need to do anything but kill a Victim player to perform an execution, as it’s an automatic mechanic when you’ve damaged them enough. It’s pretty interesting then, that only 36% of the global Texas Chain Saw Massacre Xbox players have managed to unlock the achievement. As for our TrueAchievements community, you’re a little more bloodthirsty, it seems, as a solid 75% of registered members have executed their first victim. Over on the PC side, 80% of the TrueAchievements members have unlocked the achievement, and 57% of global Texas Chain Saw Massacre PC players have met the requirements. Why the unlock percentage is so low could be for a multitude of reasons. Due to the Victim side having four open slots vs the three on the Family side, you’re more likely to become a Victim than a murderer, so maybe players weren’t enjoying being Victims and stopped playing before they got a chance to get all stabby. There is also a good chance that many players bounced off of the game after so many started it thanks to Game Pass, leaving only the hardcore minority to revel in the slaughter. The very first achievement most players unlock is Behind the Curtain, which is awarded for getting your first unlockable. All you need to do for this is level up once, which is generally achieved in your first match, and much like Welcome to the Family, there are few players reaching level two. Naturally, TrueAchievements members are leading the way with 95% of console players and 96% of PC players getting an unlockable. As for the global Xbox community who have played the game, only 48% of console players have managed to reach level two, while a more respectable 72% of PC players have achieved it. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has been a popular choice for players since it launched, which is exactly what Gun had hoped for when dropping it straight into Xbox Game Pass on day one. Before its release, the team had said that it was “paramount” that it could access the millions of Xbox Game Pass subscribers, and it looked like it paid off, as over a million players had jumped into The Texas Chain Saw Massacre within its first 24 hours. While Gun Interactive certainly seems to have enticed many players to start the game, the achievement data suggests that it has had a hard time retaining them. It’s by no means a reflection of the game’s quality — we love it — as the marketing and power of Game Pass obviously attracted players with many different tastes… it just couldn’t keep them around, it seems. If murdering people isn’t your cup of tea, keep an eye on the horizon for the many games coming to Game Pass in the future!
