The Phantom Pain PS3 Servers to Close Next Year

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has done fairly well for itself since its release on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 almost exactly six years ago. Sadly, all good things must come to an end. Konami has announced the game’s PS3 servers will be shuttered at the end of May 2022, but they have no plans to close the PS4 servers. The PS4 version of the game will remain playable online beyond May 2022 and all DLC content will still be available on the PlayStation Store. As from today, August 31, PS3 players will no longer be able to purchase items from the MGS V: The Phantom Pain in-game store. On November 30, all Phantom Pain DLC that relates to Metal Gear Online will be removed from the PlayStation Store too. Any items players have already purchased can be used until the game’s PS3 servers are taken offline at 06:00 UTC on May 31, 2022. The schedule of events published by Konami also seems to suggest the PS3 version of the game will be removed from sale a couple of months before this date on March 1, 2022.The closure of the PS3 servers will mean one of the game’s trophies will be impossible to earn. The “Intruder” trophy asks players to take part in an Infiltration FOB mission. As this involves infiltrating another online player’s FOB, this mode will be discontinued on May 31. If you haven’t gotten this trophy before the servers are closed, this also means the Platinum trophy will be unattainable for you too. All of the game’s offline modes and their related trophies will remain available once the game’s servers are closed.Metal Gear Online launched in Phantom Pain a month after the game’s release. Unfortunately the launch was plagued with server connection issues, prompting Konami to award all players 3000GP as compensation for the issues. The studio beyond the mode, Kojima Productions Los Angeles, was later closed as Konami tried to centralise its development operations. Despite this, many updates helped MGO to improve and the service has persisted through until now.[Source: Konami]
