RPG fans, rejoice! A brand new contender has emerged in the form of Umbra: The Last Summoner, and it once more challenges you to save the world. You won’t go it alone though, as you need to summon many other heroes to fight alongside you.
As you can expect from an RPG, you level them up, equip them with powerful equipment, and optimise their build in order to fight back against the forces of darkness.
In terms of plot, we go back a whole millennium, when the demon Behemoth tore a hole in the barrier between the world and underworld, creating rifts between a number of different worlds. He was defeated by a number of summoners, who then froze themselves in time until their powers would be required once again.
And that time has now come – but you are the only summoner who has answered the humans request for help (to be fair, a thousand years is a long time).
So on your own, you must summon the other ancient heroes and take the fight back to the demons. You’ll enter their rifts and battle them in their own world, including the Nightwoods, Rocky Desert, and Snowcap Mountains, to close them before taking on Behemoth himself.
How Does Umbra: The Last Summoner Play?
In terms of gameplay, that involves exploring the 15 different worlds, hunting down secrets, tackling side quests for additional rewards, and battling bosses. Combat is turn-based and sees you managing your ‘action points’ to pull off powerful moves that will decimate your opponents.
There’s a Pokemon-like elemental weakness system that you can use to your advantage, too. Simply use an elemental attack against an enemy weak to it and you’ll deal additional damage. Just be careful, as your opponents can use these against you as well.
Fortunately, you can strengthen your heroes in a number of different ways. When you defeat opponents, you earn soul energy. This lets you summon heroes, upgrade their equipment, and boost your runes. It’s this latter system that allows you to customise each of the hero’s playstyles, making them more powerful, and useful, in battle.
There’s a Whole Wide World to Explore
As you explore the world, you will encounter various different NPCs too, each of which will teach you more about the world you’re exploring. Getting to know them will also uncover new opportunities to trade, take on quests, and earn even more rewards.
If this all sounds good to you, head on over to Steam right now to grab Umbra: The Last Summoner. You can also learn more about the game on the official website, or follow the team on X (Twitter) and Instagram to follow the game’s development.
