Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection is coming to Xbox this holiday — a true celebration of one of the founding fathers of video gaming featuring 50 years’ worth of classic games, developer interviews, archive materials, and more.A lot of retro compilations are just emulated versions of the old games surrounded by a few bells and whistles, but Atari 50 looks to be so much more — as much a digital museum for these classic games as it is a collection of them for modern consoles, with insight from across the industry in the form of retrospectives and video interviews. And with retro masters Digital Eclipse taking the reins on this package, you just know it’s in safe hands.Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection announcement trailerGame Informer revealed this new retro celebration earlier today, with Atari CEO Wade Rosen saying, “When it comes to emulation or bringing classics back or doing really any sort of remastering or reimagining, I don’t know if there’s anybody who does it better than Digital Eclipse, so they were always our first choice.” Atari 50 will feature over 90 games across six vintage platforms — 2600, 5200, 7800, ST, Jaguar, and Lynx — as well as several reimagined versions of classic titles that should make modern hardware work just a little bit harder than the likes of Atari 2600 favourites Adventure, Asteroids, and Combat.Between the fact that so much love is clearly going into the presentation and production values on Atari 50 and that several of those classic Atari platforms have never officially seen their games appear on other systems before, there’s a lot to like here, especially for the older players among us who grew up on these stone-cold classics. Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection is set to launch this holiday for Xbox Series X and Xbox One, as well as every other major platform. Looking forward to this retro love-in? Let us know!
