Fantasy RPGs are everywhere you look these days, but that doesn’t mean they’re all repetitive clones. Some choose to take things in surprising directions or combine multiple elements that make for a fresh-feeling experience, and The Adventurers looks to be a newcomer that falls into that latter category. With top-down turn-based action, a pixel art aesthetic, and an expansive fantasy world that is inspired by the DnD universe, it’s just launched into early access on Steam.
Of course, there is a lot in The Adventurers that’ll be familiar if you’re a fan of the best RPGs and best fantasy games. There’s an inventory that will no doubt end up overflowing with swords, maces, and armor pieces. There’s a world full of taverns, blacksmiths, and forests. And there’s an incredibly deep character creator.
Many of the typical hallmarks are there. However, with its blend of a pixel art style, isometric perspective, and strategic turn-based combat, it packages up that fantasy experience into a bundle that feels pretty original. You’ll be focusing a lot on not only finding powerful items but crafting the perfect team composition, either by creating or recruiting characters with strong abilities. The ability to create multiple characters and not just a singular ‘main’ playable character, is pretty neat – however, you’re able to “bolster your crew by picking up recruits” from the places you visit.
As mentioned, battles are turn-based, and rather than one-on-one combat or team fights of equal numbers, there will be plenty of occasions where you’re outnumbered by large groups of enemies. Defending from different angles and dealing out damage to so many units will require plenty of tactical thinking.
The intricacy and depth of combat appears to also be matched by the actual content – in The Adventurers, you’ll be able to seize strongholds pick up contracts from people in the various settlements you visit, commission master craftsmen to build you items of your exact specification, and experience “chance encounters” that hold a lot of that DnD charm.
While this is an early access launch for The Adventurers, developer Eternal Vigilance has already laid out a comprehensive roadmap that steers the game to launch with five new classes, hundreds more events and quests, expansions to the battle system, improvements to the UI, and so much more. Of course, dozens of other tweaks, fixes, and new additions will arrive too based on the feedback of players, given its early access status.
The Adventurers is out right now in Steam Early Access. Until Monday, November 18 you can grab the game with 25% off, making it only $9.74 / £8.24, or there’s a free demo for you to try if you’re on the fence. To grab the game and learn more about it, head over to its Steam page here.
