Team17 has cancelled its controversial Worms NFT project after just 24 hours, following a huge backlash from its development partners and the community. Earlier this week, the Worms developer announced it was getting into the NFT game by partnering with Reality Gaming Group to create and sell unique, computer-generated artwork using the power of the blockchain. The move was quickly criticised online by both fans and Team17’s development partners. Aggro Crab, who developed the Team17-published Going Under, quickly distanced themselves from the project, saying it believed “NFTs cannot be environmentally friendly, or useful, and are really just an overall f*ing grift.” Aggro Crab then stated it wouldn’t work with Team17 on its future titles. Overcooked developer Ghost Town Games took to Twitter to reassure its fans that none of its games would ever engage with NFTs. “We don’t support NFTs. We think they carry too great an environmental and social cost,” the studio wrote. Yooka Laylee developer Playtonic also said it had “no interest in utilising NFTs in any aspect of our business now or in the future. Nor do we endorse the use of NFTs in the wider world.”A day later, after considering feedback from its development partners and its communities, Team17 announced it was cancelling its Worms NFT project. “We have listened to our Teamsters, development partners, and our games’ communities, and the concerns they’ve expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space,” the company said on Twitter. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a video game company cancel its NFT plans following backlash. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 developer GSC Game World made a swift U-turn on its decision to include NFTs in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. Veteran voice actor Troy Baker also recently cancelled his partnership with an NFT company. Are you glad to see Team17 pull back from the NFT space? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments.
