Grand Theft Auto 6 publisher Take-Two has filed a patent for a new locomotion system that promises to deliver “highly dynamic and realistic animations,”The patent was spotted by Reddit user Tobbelobbon30, who did a little digging on Tobias Kleanthous, who was “mentioned in the [GTA 6] leaks.” They later found that Kleanthous worked at Rockstar between 2014 and late 2021, specialising in AI/gameplay and animation. In addition, Kleanthous is also the lead inventor and author of a patent titled System and Method for Virtual Character Locomotion, which is described on their LinkedIn profile as “regarding animation locomotion control based on some of the core technology” they “architected and implemented at Rockstar Games.” Related Content — Sony PS5 Complete Guide — Everything Explained About PlayStation 5 For New Owners In 2023 Tobbelobben30 commented: Based on this patent, it seems like they’re using a clever system. They’ve built a library of small building blocks for character movements. These blocks can be combined in various ways to create a wide range of animations. For instance, think about a character in the game walking in the rain, feeling tired, or getting injured. Instead of designing separate animations for each of these situations, they use these building blocks to put together the character’s movements naturally. As a result, Tobbelobbon30 reckons that “GTA 6 can have more diverse and lifelike animations,” resulting in characters moving that “match the weather, their energy level, and their injuries,” resulting in the crime epic feeling “more immersive. It’s like having characters that can adapt to different situations, making the game world feel more real and thrilling.Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently in development for undisclosed platforms and a release date has yet to be announced.[Source – Reddit via Eurogamer]
