Sulfur is an FPS RPG hybrid with a gorgeous art style, and it’s out now

I have to admit I’m a little scared of Sulfur. I’m a fan of classic FPS games like Doom, ARPGs like Diablo, and roguelikes like Shattered Pixel Dungeon. So a game that combines aspects of all three types of game into one seems dangerous to me. It feels that if I dare play it I’ll become lost, forever sucked into its world. That threat is now very real, as Sulfur is out now in Steam Early Access and ready to be played.

While Sulfur is very much an FPS, it’s got a lot going on aside from just blasting foes with whatever weapon you’ve either found or cobbled together. It’s also a roguelike, where you delve ever deeper into mysterious areas in search of loot, gear, and answers before extracting back to your base – or dying, of course. If that weren’t all it’s an RPG too, with all the inventory management and NPC interactions you could ever ask for. It’s a heady mix – but that’s not all it’s got going for it.

The way Sulfur presents itself is unlike nearly anything else out there. It has a cartoonish art style where enemies, loot, and the levels themselves are shown in bold, blocky colors. It’s painterly style reminds me of Dishonored, if that immersive sim weren’t so grim and instead had colorful goblins running at you trying to gnaw your legs off.

With a wicked, satirical sense of humor that drips out of every pore and a soundtrack that quite simply slaps, Sulfur is a very dangerous looking game indeed. Also there’s a car. I’m not sure where the car fits in but it’s there, and it appears you can drive it.

Sulfur is out now in early access. If you’d like to check it out for yourself, and see what the game’s developer has planned over the coming months, head over to Steam to learn more.
