Although it dropped straight into Xbox Game Pass, few players are unlocking Payday 3 achievements, and now Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjorgren has exited the company after the disappointing launch of Payday 3. Since September, Payday 3 has seen consistent backlash from fans due to its performance issues, which is why it has not yet appeared on our list of the best first-person shooters on Xbox.According to our data, Payday 3 jumped straight into the top three most popular games on our Gameplay Chart when it launched on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Game Pass in September 2023. It managed to stay within the top 40 for around six weeks before dropping out entirely. As of this week, Payday 3 is 191st in our chart, which compiles data from over 2.4 million global Xbox accounts.Starbeeze CEO exits the company following Payday 3’s disappointing launchAs announced by Starbreeze, Tobias Sjorgren has left the company but will “remain available” for a smooth transition as board member Juergen Goeldner steps in as an interim CEO while Starbreeze looks for a permanent replacement. “The company has a clear strategy centered around creating attractive games on our own and licensed IPs. The board’s consolidated assessment is that the execution of strategy needs a different leadership. Juergen Goeldner has been part of the board since 2023 and, with over 40 years of industry experience, is a strong interim solution,” Starbreeze chairman Torgny Hellstrom said. “On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to thank Tobias Sjögren for his achievements during the past three years. Tobias took over the helm of Starbreeze in a challenging phase of its journey and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”In January, Starbreeze announced that it had put together a “strike team” to work on a host of fixes and improvements flagged by the Payday 3 community. The team is now working on Operation Medic Bag, a series of improvements it expects to roll out this year targeting progression, a revamped UI, server stability, new solo and offline modes, and fresh content. In December, Starbreeze announced that it’s working on a new co-op Dungeons & Dragons game, and while I love the idea of a Payday-style D&D adventure, the company will need to drastically improve its quality control if it’s going to succeed.
