Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 might be getting a sequel, but developer Saber Interactive is keen to reassure players that the current iteration isn’t going away any time soon. “We’re excited to see your enthusiasm,” the studio writes about the recent Space Marine 3 announcement, “although we hear those of you who fear for Space Marine 2 and its future support.” As its first round of PTS testing rolls on, the developer outlines what’s still ahead for SM2.
“Let us set the record straight: Space Marine 3 does not mean the end of Space Marine 2’s development,” it continues. “Far from it.” The 2024 release holds the record for the highest active Steam player count among all Warhammer 40k games, and recently saw the launch of a public test server that is being used to trial the upcoming patch 7.0. The next update includes a new PvE map featuring a terrifying Tyranid boss known as the Trygon, the Inferno Pistol, and custom private lobbies for PvP.
“We are working on much more content and surprises for the months to come,” Saber continues, “such as a new class, more operations, melee weapons and more. Trust us, there are surprises even data miners haven’t found out about. This announcement simply marks the genesis of a new project, years away from release. We’ve made a decision and have just started the process. Many of you were very excited for this project and this makes us incredibly happy and motivated. Thank you for the unwavering support.”
Saber also offers some responses to the PTS feedback it’s collected on patch 7.0. It notes concerns that the new prestige perks aren’t game-changing enough, but explains that these are not designed to be too strong. “We don’t want prestige perks to become ‘must-haves’ for higher difficulties. This would make grinding for them an obligation when we really want them as minor rewards for those who choose to pursue them.”
Finally, the team rounds off with the responses to a recent player poll on its Absolute difficulty. Players voted to see more, and more aggressive, enemies, but were against increasing enemy health and damage or augmenting the limitations on ammo refills. “We are planning to make some careful changes in patch 8.0,” Saber concludes.
