Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a patent that describes the ability to dynamically adjust the difficult of a game based on the player’s skill level. The patent is titled ADAPTIVE DIFFICULTY CALIBRATION FOR SKILLS-BASED ACTIVITIES IN VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS, and describes the ability to adjust difficulty depending on how the player is performing. The collected data maybe evaluated to identify whether a user gaming performance level corresponds to an expected level of performance. When the user gaming performance level does not correspond to an expected level of performance, parameters that change the difficultly of the game may be changed automatically.Since games today have fixed levels of difficulty, a user that enjoyed playing the game at one level may not enjoy the game very much at a higher level of difficulty.Related Content — Sony PS5 Complete Guide — Everything Explained About PlayStation 5 For New Owners in 2023The patent describes various parameters that this technology can affect, including characteristics pertaining to movement speed, strength of character, number of enemies, difficulty in enemy AI, and others, which can be incrementally raised or deceased over time. Sony also argues that current video games featured unbalanced enemies and challenge, with sections either being incredibly easy or difficult. It should be noted that a few games already utilise this type of technology, but from the look of things, Sony is eager to expand on it and implement it in many games. As with all patents however, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll actually happen. [Source – Exputer]
