Sonic Frontiers gameplay shows off a whole bunch of nothing

Sega has put out the first gameplay trailer for Sonic Frontiers, showing off open world exploration as Sonic potters around a weird abandoned island solving basic puzzles to make fruit appear. That’s it. That’s the demo.Sonic Frontiers was announced at The Game Awards last year with a cinematic trailer, with this first glimpse at gameplay coming courtesy of IGN, who promise more updates on the game later this month. In the meantime, check out sandbox Sonic for yourself.Sonic Frontiers first gameplay trailerIs it just us or does everything seem a bit off here? The lack of any real sense of speed or momentum is a cardinal sin for a Sonic game, but it’s the lack of purpose that is even more troubling — it’s just Sonic strolling around a big empty husk of a world, solving the same basic generic puzzles we’ve seen in every other open world game over the years as filler content. Then there’s the world itself, with the realistic visual style at odds with the design that just sees rails, boost pads, and springs plonked around the place almost at random like some kind of dev test map or fan project. It’s like a long-abandoned amusement park, devoid of life and littered with the skeletons of dead coasters that just hang in the air awkwardly, waiting for a daring hedgehog to grind them for grinding’s sake. Fingers crossed Sega has more up its sleeve to build on this reveal, because what we’ve seen so far really isn’t promising, especially with the game due to launch later this year. Big the Cat isn’t even in it, so, like, what’s the point?Still, what did you make of the Sonic Frontiers gameplay? Going to let yourself get suckered into the Sonic Cycle all over again, or are you done with that dance? Let us know!
