Skull & Bones will be hosting a seasonal live event that aims to raise awareness about overfishing, particularly shark fins, thanks to a partnership with the organisation, Playing for the Planet.Announcing the Skull & Bones initiative on the Playing for the Planet website, Ubisoft Singapore senior gameplay programmer Wong Yi described the planned seasonal live event as a way to “address resource exploitation, showing what happens in the game world and the real world when the demand for sharks’ fins results in the overfishing of sharks.”Ubisoft plans to raise marine conservation awareness with Skull & BonesSkull & Bones will have us spending much of our time sailing across the ocean and fighting for survival, and as spotted by Axios’ Stephen Totilo on Twitter, Ubisoft looks to be taking the opportunity to partner with Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) to raise awareness for marine conservation. The partnership will also “show players that their in-game actions can have a meaningful impact on the oceans that have inspired their game world.”Called an “activation,” the first initiative will target overfishing during one of the game’s first seasonal live events and will show players the repercussions of resource exploitation. It’ll focus on the trading of shark fins, and we’ll have the choice to either continue fishing for sharks and witness the “destructive nature of the shark fin trade,” or help the community by contributing to in-game marine wildlife protection. You’ll have a chance to earn a host of rewards by contributing to community challenges, which will unlock for all players depending on the level of participation they had.”Like our current societal challenges, changes need to be collaborative, raise awareness, and encourage others to learn of and consider additional ecological causes that need attention”It certainly sounds like a great initiative, but we’d love to know what you think about it.
