Siege 2? You’re already playing it

The creative director of Rainbow Six: Siege has said the team will continue producing content in the form of new operators and maps, rather than making a fully-fledged sequel any time soon.A Reddit AMA was in session with RB6: Siege creative director Leroy Athanassof (thanks Gaming Bolt) and he answered some very big questions. About the continuation of Ubisoft’s popular tactical shooter, Leroy was surprisingly open. “The Siege of the future will be dramatically different from today’s Siege, to the point where we could call it Siege 2. However, as a team, we strongly believe we can bring about these changes in an incremental way, within the current Siege framework.” The creative director made this comment in connection to the important work that the team did on the back-end, the UX, and gameplay during Operation Health, indicating that any major fresh pushes for the game would require more of this kind of work. About what a sequel would have to achieve in order to make it a worthwhile step, Leroy was clear as a windowpane before a round starts. “Siege 2 would mean a new game, a new environment, probably a new inventory and maybe a new dev team. We do not feel that this is what is needed for the community. We care about your investment in the game, we do not want to move to a new one. Instead, we want to protect your investment and increase its value it by making your current “home” (which is Siege) even better. It’s like renovations to your old house to make it up to date, shiny and appealing.”In all truth, this seems like a great stance for the future of Siege. There would be a significant slowdown in Siege content if a fresh development cycle started and the hardcore community and eSports scene are well established: the dream position of Ubisoft. The only major market left to capture is getting non-initiated and returning players through the door, as the learning curve is still essentially like an overhanging cliff face. What do you lot think? Let us know and we will see you in the comments!
