Survival crafting RPG and city builder Sengoku Dynasty is a game that blends a lot of aspects into a sandbox journey set in feudal era Japan. Starting out with nothing, you’ll gather resources to craft tools, weapons, and medicine as you might in a Rust or Valheim. Then you’ll begin to build out your town as you might in Manor Lords, before expanding your dynasty to ever-grander heights. First released in early access in August 2023, Sengoku Dynasty 1.0 is finally here, with a wealth of updates and a discount for the full launch.
Sengoku Dynasty recently updated its combat dramatically, with new souls-lite action. It might not be the comprehensive systems of an Elden Ring, but its more considered combat makes getting into scraps with enemies a lot more engaging. Alongside this, the survival game also introduced weapons and gear with damage and defense values to enable a wider range of builds, leaning further into its RPG elements.
Now, as part of the 1.0 update, you can look forward to new regions that can be conquered to help further your empire. As you liberate each zone from its former leaders, you gain access to the local natural resources and can convince its people to join your cause. As you grow from a small-scale leader into a full-blown Daimyo, you’ll earn unique recipes and additional technology to further your dynasty.
It wouldn’t be a true feudal Japan experience without some proper samurai gear, so a full armor set has been introduced along with three iconic weapons: the Naginata, a polearm; the Kanabo, a spiked two-handed war club; and a secret final option. In town, you’ll have a range of new building options at your disposal. Enemy combat AI has been improved, along with updates to hunting including simplified bow targeting, a range of arrow types, and more responsive animal behavior.
Tweaks to combat mean rival factions and bandit camps are more dangerous than ever, but if you aren’t interested in fighting you can skip battles to instead focus on more peaceful means of unlocking new areas and acquiring rare resources. There’s also the long-awaited arrival of the character editor, which now includes the ability to play as a female avatar, and a new family questline will allow you to romance one of your villagers, get married, and even have a child to carry on your legacy.
This launch certainly isn’t the end for updates, however – quite the opposite. Developer Superkami’s post-launch roadmap includes plenty more features that the team is working on. As the game continues to grow, it will introduce enemy raids, an enhanced heir system, procedural quests, and spiritualism and karma mechanics. Also in development are another map, additional animals, more challenges, and further performance optimizations.
Sengoku Dynasty version 1.0 is out now on Steam, with a 20% discount available through Tuesday November 19 to celebrate the game leaving early access. Expect to pay $23.99 / £19.99 for your copy. Find it on Steam, where you can take a look through the complete list of other smaller changes if you’re curious to know what else is new. Superkami also recommends starting a fresh game if you’ve been playing during early access, in order to take full advantage of the new Daimyo system.
