Sonic Frontiers is set to take us on a brand-new open-zone adventure on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC later this year, and Sega has now revealed more about the gameplay and features we can expect to see.Sega has revealed a bunch of new Sonic Frontiers information alongside a couple of screenshots via a press release, which includes our first look at the new Cyber Space area of the game. Frontiers is an action-adventure game with a focus on open-zone exploration and platforming. We’ll see the blue bundle of joy racing around the Starfall Islands sometime later this year on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC.Sonic Frontiers new gameplay screenshotsThis new adventure will take us to the Starfall Islands in search of Chaos Emeralds with Sonic, Amy, and Tails. But as the trio approach the islands, their plane experiences a few issues (can Sonic put his head between his knees to kiss his butt goodbye?) and they’re sucked into a dimensional portal. The blue streak wakes to find that he’s in Cyber Space, a digital world, and that his friends are missing. Sonic then embarks on a journey to find his missing friends, battle enemies, and travel to new areas like Kronos Island.Cyber Space is a dimension created by an ancient civilisation and has doorways spread all over the Starfall Islands. Here, you’ll be required to solve puzzles and complete challenges to unlock Portal Gears, a currency that unlocks doors to special levels that offer a more traditional Sonic experience — expect fast-paced platforming and speed-running action. These levels will need to be completed in order to progress through the game because they reward you with Vault Keys.Once you’ve had your first introduction to Cyber Space, you’ll travel to Kronos Island, which is the first open zone of the game and the real start of your adventure. Here, you’ll find a thriving area filled with flora and ruins, as well as the island’s inhabitants, the Koco. As you journey across the Starfall Islands, you’ll have a chance to explore a world map “bigger than ever before” and evolve the land around you as you venture deeper into the islands’ mysteries. The game features a new combat system, which will see you take on a number of different enemies, from wheel-like creatures called Bangers to towering titan bosses like Asura. Frontiers gives you dodges, parries, counters, and more that allow you to strategically battle your way to victory, and you’ll unlock even more combos as you progress through the game. One of the newest additions to Sonic’s arsenal is the Cyloop ability, which creates a band of light to mirror his tracks. Surrounding enemies, items, or areas will allow you to uncover even more effects of the ability. Sonic Frontiers will offer you two different playstyles when you start the game: Action and High Speed. Action Style focuses on more accurate platforming mechanics for new players, while High Speed Style is aimed at more experienced players and focuses on high-speed gameplay. Sega also says that an Auto Mode will be available, which allows you to perform various attack combos with a single button, so “all Sonic fans can easily enjoy the fast and fluid combat system.”As we saw in the recent gameplay trailer, Sonic Frontiers’ zones are fairly large, so expect them to be filled with various puzzles. Each puzzle will grant you items to increase Sonic’s power and defence stats, reveal hidden parts of the map, or even unlock new ways of traversing the environment. Will you be looking to streak across the Starfall Islands when Sonic Frontiers makes its way to our consoles later this year?
