Samsung uses MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 to verify its 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X RAM

Samsung unveiled 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X RAM back in April and promised to start mass production in the second half of this year. The new RAM chips just completed an important step towards that goal and successfully completed verification at the advertised 10.7Gbps speed, the fastest in the industry.

This was done in a collaboration between Samsung and MediaTek. The upcoming Dimensity 9400 was hooked up to 16GB of the new LPDDR5X RAM and this was used as a test bench for the new chips. It’s not a simple test, though, the process took three months.

MediaTek is mum on details on the new Dimensity 9400 chip, but it’s safe to assume that it supports the new fastest mobile RAM. All MediaTek says is that the 9400 is coming in the second half of this year (the Dimensity 9300 was announced in November 2023).

Samsung’s new LPDDR5X chips promise 25% improvements in power efficiency and performance (compared to the previous generation). The company touts AI use cases, of course, as its sibling company that makes smartphones has made AI a key feature on the Galaxy S and Z series.

This RAM will be used in smartphones, obviously, but LPDDR5 chips have found their way in automotive applications too. AI is a buzzword in the car world too, with a focus on self-driving rather than text and image generation.

“Working together with Samsung Electronics has made it possible for MediaTek’s next-generation Dimensity chipset to become the world’s first to be validated at LPDDR5X operating speeds up to 10.7Gbps, enabling upcoming devices to deliver AI functionality and mobile performance at a level we’ve never seen before. This updated architecture will make it easier for developers and users to leverage more AI capabilities and take advantage of more features with less impact on battery life,” said JC Hsu, Corporate Senior Vice President at MediaTek.
