As a big fan of ARPGs like Diablo, loot-based roguelikes such as Dead Cells and Crypt of the Necrodancer, and Terraria-style explorative, gear-driven indie games, I really enjoyed the first Hammerwatch and its subsequent roguelite spin-off. Heroes of Hammerwatch 2, a sequel to that second game, has just arrived on Steam, boasting seven classes, a city builder, plenty of gear, up to four-player co-op, and potentially “infinite progression.” If that sounds up your alley, you can even try it before you buy thanks to a free demo.

Heroes of Hammerwatch 2 brings over the run-based roguelike and RPG elements that earned its predecessor a very robust 87% Steam rating from players. The sequel also offers seven classes to choose from – you’ll be able to start out as a Warrior, Paladin, Ranger, or Wizard, with the Rogue, Warlock, and Sorcerer unlocked as you play. Building upon those further are three distinct specializations for each of the classes that introduce additional active abilities and passive effects.

I’m a big fan of the pixel-art design, which blends style and clarity well. Early impressions show that the sequel carries on the previous game’s satisfying monster density, handing you lots of rewarding skills to experiment with and carve through the hordes before you, as well as plenty of delicious loot to tweak and hone your builds. Every run sees you attempting to conquer the Dark Citadel, with eight different biome styles and random generation meaning you’ll never know quite what’s ahead.

Between runs, you’ll build up your town, recruiting NPCs to help you on future attempts. You can even craft, upgrade, and enchant your gear to further enhance your options, or discover all manner of new blueprints and attunements to improve gear. Even once you’ve succeeded, that’s just the start – the scaling New Game Plus mode means increased difficulty, better gear, and bigger buffs, with the loop presenting “unlimited leveling opportunities.”

Heroes of Hammerwatch 2 is out now on Steam, with a 15% discount meaning you’ll pay $15.29 / £12.74 if you buy it before Tuesday January 21, or $17.99 / £14.99 afterwards. You can also download the demo now if you want to try it out first.

If you love playing with friends, the best co-op games are where you’ll want to be. Or you might prefer to satiate your thirst for loot in the best games like Diablo instead.
