Rockstmith studio Ubisoft San Francisco is shutting down alongside the company’s Osaka, Japan studio as XDefiant has bombed. After a series of denials, Ubisoft has confirmed that its free-to-play shooter failed to make its mark in a highly competitive market, resulting in a decision being made to shut down servers in June 2025.

Ubisoft shutting down XDefiant next year, but has already stopped accepting new players

Ubisoft penned a lenghty note to XDefiant players explaining its decision to shut the shooter down. In a separate internal memo later shared publicly, the company confirmed closures of both San Francisco and Osaka studios alongside downsizing of its Sydney team, resulting in hundreds of employees losing their jobs.

“Many free-to-play games take a long time to find their footing and become profitable,” Ubisoft wrote. “It’s a long journey that Ubisoft and the teams working on the game were prepared to make until very recently. But unfortunately, the journey became too much to sensibly continue.”

As of today, XDefiant is not accepting any new players but existing players will still receive Season 3 content and will be able to continue playing until June 2025. Those who purchased the Ultimate Founder’s Pack will receive a full refund.
