Players have begun worrying about PS6 price after yesterday’s PS5 Pro reveal. As predicted, the mid-gen upgrade costs a pretty penny — $700 without a disc drive and vertical stand — and some have begun wondering if this is a sign of things to come.
Consoles have previously been sold at a loss, but how low can PS6 price be?
Following the highly-anticipated PS5 Pro presentation, I saw numerous posts pop up on gaming forums and social media, with some players theorizing that Sony is testing the waters for the PS6. I can see why this is a popular theory, but the fact is, economic conditions and inflation have negatively impacted the cost of living and cost of doing business worldwide post pandemic.
Unfortunately, gaming is becoming an increasingly unaffordable hobby for many, but it’s a little premature to say that the PS6 will come with a ginormous price tag. Console gaming has gone through periods where it went from being an expensive hobby to a generally affordable one, depending on economic factors at the time. PS6’s price tag will be no exception.
That said, it’s no secret that Sony initially sold both the PS4 and PS5 at a loss, but that might not be feasible going forward. The razer thin margins have meant that Sony had to find other ways to compensate, including but not limited to increasing the prices of games and services like PS Plus.
Whatever the case, PS5 Pro’s sales will play a significant part in Sony determining its next steps. The price has been unanimously slammed, but opinions on the internet don’t necessarily reflect potential sales.
