Back in 2023, reports surfaced that PS5 consoles placed in vertical position were at risk of being damaged due to a design flaw that allegedly resulted in liquid metal (used for cooling) spilling over. Those reports caused quite a stir, with many disputing their authenticity. Now, a PS5 Pro teardown video shows that Sony may have quietly fixed the problem, if it did genuinely exist.
PS5 Pro design possibly addresses vertical placement concerns
As pointed out by tech YouTube channel How-FixIT, the PS5 Pro’s heat sink block features surface “ridges” of sorts that contact the liquid metal and help to keep it evenly distributed over the APU chip. How-FixIT reckons that this minimizes the risk of the liquid metal spilling over unevenly and pooling elsewhere, causing the console to overheat.
The video also shows a comparison with the standard PS5’s heat sink block, which is completely flat.
The aforementioned reports originally surfaced in early 2023, before the introduction of the PS5 Slim. However, both the launch PS5 and PS5 Slim featured heat sink blocks that could potentially cause the spill when placed vertically.
While those reports are still disputed, we can’t think of any other reason for the introduction of the ridges than what How-FixIT has suggested here.
