During the PSN outage earlier today, players claimed their PlayStation Portal, PlayStation’s remote play device, stopped working. While not every player was affected, it still was an issue for those wanting to play PS5 games portably.
Why are PS Portals not working during PSN outage?
On the night of September 30 (or the morning of October 1, in some regions), PSN experienced an outage that lasted seven hours. Besides PlayStation Direct, much of its network service experienced issues. Now a Reddit user claims to have the answer as to why PS Portals stopped working during the PSN outage.
User drdalebrant on the PlayStation Portal subreddit shared players who have not used the PS Portal frequently would need to ping PSN for authentication. However, with PSN down, some players will remain on the connecting screen because the device could not authenticate.
They also attempted to use wired internet on the PS5 and connected the PS5 to the same wi-fi as the PS portal. Unfortunately, the same result occurred, which confirmed it was not a issue with their home internet connection. The remote play device just could not authenticate because PSN was down.
Fortunately for some, PS Portal users could connect during the PSN outage. On a separate PlayStation Portal subreddit thread, many users claimed they were still able to use the device during the PSN outage.
“You might have difficulty signing in or creating an account for PlayStation Network,” Sony said during the outage. “We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.”
This also caused issues with launching games, apps, and other network features like purchasing products on the PS Store. The PS App and PS Stars were also down.
The issues have been resolved, with PSN now up and running. Anyone still experiencing issues should contact Sony support.
