Colby Covington won the grudge match in the UFC 272 main event, using his expert-level wrestling to batter Jorge Masvidal and win the bout with ease.

Those waiting to see how Masvidal would answer Covington’s wrestling got to see some action in round one, as Covington, after some struggle, managed to get Covington to the ground. Covington dominated the first frame, though unable to secure a choke.

Masvidal battled back in the second round, landing several hard shots, including a knockdown. But Masvidal made a mistake by following Covington to the ground, allowing Covington to wrestle his way back into control. Covington was dominant once again in the third, taking him down and barely letting up.

Covington rocked Masvidal in the fourth, but Masvidal managed to clip Covington and score his own knockdown. Masvidal, however, was too exhausted to follow up, and Covington treated him like a rag doll in the final round.

The judges scored the fight 49-46, 50-44 and 50-45, all in Covington’s favor.

Reactions to Colby Covington defeating Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272

Covington entered this fight coming off a close loss to UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 268 in Madison Square Garden. It was the second loss to Usman in Covington’s last three fights, also previously unsuccessfully challenging for the UFC welterweight title at UFC 245. Between the two losses to Usman, Covington easily handled Tyron Woodley in a fifth-round TKO at UFC Vegas 11.

After raising his popularity to the moon and scoring three straight victories and the “BMF” belt in 2019, Masvidal entered tonight’s bout on a two-fight losing streak, with back-to-back losses to Usman. Masvidal fell to Usman via unanimous decision on short notice at UFC 251 and was knocked out by Usman at UFC 261.
