The projected college football rankings coming out of Week 6 got a shake-up in the Top 10 thanks to Iowa’s win over Penn State and BYU’s stunning loss to Boise State.

The undefeated teams in college football are dwindling.

For some, Penn State and Iowa, it was inevitable one of them would fall.

For others, like BYU, they got bit by the upset bug.

How do the results from Saturday afternoon impact the college football rankings?

Penn State will fall out of the Top 10 after their hotly-contested Top 5 matchup, falling 23-20 to Iowa. It is still possible they won’t drop that far considering the tight battle and the loss of quarterback Sean Clifford due to injury. Still, voters tend to punish teams for losses no matter how they come.

Iowa will get to enjoy their No. 3 ranking knowing Alabama and Georgia will eventually have to play each other.

Projected college football rankings after Penn State, BYU suffer first losses

  1. Alabama
  2. Georgia
  3. Iowa
  4. Cincinnati
  5. Oklahoma
  6. Ohio State
  7. Oregon
  8. Michigan
  9. Michigan State
  10. Oklahoma State

BYU definitely won’t get any benefit of the doubt after they lost to a Boise State team that started the season 2-3. Even though they’ve had an impressive season so far, the Cougars couldn’t afford any losses in their quest to sneak into the College Football Playoff.

Their hopes have essentially been dashed.
