Police Helicopter Incident Fuels Speculation, FOIA Requests Reveal Details – sUAS News

This is not an April fools post, honestly! (No really it’s not)

On a starry night last November overhead Newmarket Police helicopter G-POLJ flew away from something, was it a drone or UAP (UFO in old money)?

The event came as part of a cluster of sightings around the airbase at RAF Lakenheath, home to the 48th Fighter Wing. These sightings were deemed so important that F15’s were launched to CAP.

The 48th Fighter Wing is the largest U.S. fighter operation in Europe, the wing employs four combat ready fighter squadrons of F-15 Strike Eagles and F-35A Lightning II aircraft.

Further down the line these incidents caused new drone flight restriction areas to be enacted in the UK.

Our very own FOIA king, Mr Hudson was straight onto this one and soon unearthed information.

UFO enthusiast Mr Onyeche also submitted FOIA’s and hit the jackpot when he discovered the helicopter departed the scene due to safety concerns.

Dear Suffolk Constabulary,

In JOINT FOI2024/00070 (https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/d…) on 26th February 2025 you supplied me with a number of public reports of drone sightings between 22nd November 2024 and 27th November 2024, including the following two which were of particular interest to me:

1) “FORCED TO TAKE EMERGENCY EVASIVE ACTION IN RELATION TO A DRONE WHICH CAME WITHIN A DANGEROUSLY”

2) “NPAS IS WITHDRAWING DUE TO A DRONE COMING CLOSE TO THEM.”

Would you be able to provide me with the time, the date and the location (at village, suburb, town or city level)? Please also advise whether your police force investigated the incident, and their findings from their investigations. The first item listed above also seems to be cut short, and incomplete, can you provide the full entry?

To comply with the application of Section 40(2) of Freedom of Information Act 2000 “Personal Data”, and to favour disclosure – I request that you please ensure that any personal information are redacted, so as to remain lawful under the terms of the 1st and 2nd Principles of the Data Protection Act 1998.

Yours faithfully,Mr Onyeche

Ian sums it all up very nicely in this video.

Confirmation on FOIA that a police helicopter retreated from a drone to avoid a collision.Given there’s only 1 matching Airprox this will be the Lakenheath/Mildenhall incident likely over Newmarket.Credit to the infamous Mr Onyeche! pic.twitter.com/tLPlF2ajIB— UAVHive (@UAVHive) March 29, 2025

Now this story is going to generate lots of interest as the National Police Air Service (NPAS) took video, but they are not releasing it. The media want it though, so the fight to get it is on.

It is rumoured that it was a fixed wing machine, I am certain if we see the video and if it’s clear enough we will be able to identify it.

But otherwise, I’m all in for it being a UFO. A Russian or Chinese spy drone looking at Lakenheath is dull.
