While PlayStation has always made big, AAA single-player, narrative focused titles its bread and butter, that hasn’t stopped the company from trying to broaden its horizons in recent years.Mainly with its endeavours to put out a first-party live-service title that could help it compete against the likes of today’s top live service games. So far, its endeavours have led to the purchasing of Bungie, Haven Studios, and most recently Firewalk Studios.Bungie is PlayStation’s biggest single purchase, and brought the ever-popular Destiny under the PlayStation banner. However what’s to come from Haven and Firewalk is still very much unknown. In an interview with PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst, he spoke on the live service plans PlayStation has, and the approach the company is taking to jumping head-first in the live service pool.“We understand the competitive environment that is out there, and the time investment from players that live services off, and we want to deliver the highest quality games. There is a risk that we talk about ‘live service’ in generic terms – as if it is a single genre, or even a single business model. PlayStation Studios are making a variety of games that could be referred to as ‘live services,’ targeting different genres, different release schedules and at different scales. We are also creating games for different audiences, and I take confidence from our track record in creating worlds and stories that PlayStation fans love.”Source – [GamesIndustry.Biz]
