Konami is officially dropping the PES name from its flagship football franchise and has announced eFootball, a “next-generation, free-to-play football simulation experience.” The new game launches as a digital-only title in autumn for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, PC, and with mobile versions following soon after. Konami says that thanks to a new engine built off the foundations of the Unreal Engine, animation in the football sim has been overhauled. A new technology called Motion Matching allows for four times as many animations as before to achieve realistic movement on the pitch. This sounds similar to EA’s HyperMotion technology used in FIFA 22. Konami has also published a roadmap for eFootball, which reveals that local matches featuring clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Juventus, FC Barcelona, and others will be available for free at launch (certain game modes will be sold as optional DLC), along with cross-generation matchmaking between consoles families (full cross-play follows in the winter). eFootball roadmapEarly Autumn:All-new gameplay experience, powered by Unreal® EngineCross-generation matchmaking (i.e. PlayStation®5 vs. PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S vs. Xbox One)Local Matches featuring FC Barcelona, Juventus, FC Bayern, Manchester United and moreAutumn:Cross-platform matchmaking between consoles and PC (i.e. PlayStation®5 vs. Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation®5 vs. PC Steam®, etc.)Team Building Mode (Name TBC) opened – build your own team by acquiring playersOnline Leagues (Name TBC) opened – take your original team and compete in a global, competitive leagueMatch Pass system – earn items and players by playing eFootball™Winter:Mobile controller support addedFull cross-platform matchmaking across all available platforms including mobile, when using a compatible controllerProfessional and amateur esports tournaments kick-offKonami has promised to share more on eFootball and gameplay in August.
