The upcoming season will introduce two new playtests for the returning Overwatch 2 6v6 format in Season 14.
6-player teams are coming back to Overwatch 2 Season 14, the latest Director’s Take confirms.
Blizzard opened talks about 6v6’s potential return to the core game in July, and now we finally have a solid answer. The playtests for six-man teams are slated near the start of Season 14, with innovative twists also coming to the current 5v5 format.
The latest Director’s Take discusses when 6v6 is coming back, a new game mode and plenty more. Here’s everything you need to know about the return of 6v6 in Overwatch 2 6v6!
Overwatch 2 6v6 Details
The new Director’s Take confirmed two 6v6 playtests throughout Season 14; one at the start of the season and one midcycle playtest, both aimed towards making the format feel balanced with Overwatch 2’s current state.
There’s a lot to consider when you add an extra man to the team, like OW2’s passive abilities and how flexible the team comp can get. So Blizzard’s adding a few extra twists to the playtest.
The first 6v6 playtest at the start of Season 14 will introduce “Min 1, Max 3”, a new role format that requires one hero from each category, but allows up to three.
This introduces new ways for players to mix it up, like finding dominant DPS combos that win every fight, or a bunker comp that completely locks down Control Points.
Overwatch 2 Season 14 6v6 Start Date
The first Overwatch 2 6v6 playtest runs from December 17 onwards while the second playtest drops in the midseason.
There’s a lot to be excited for in Season 14, and new game modes coming this season once the midcycle hits!
Overwatch 2 New 5v5 Game Modes
New game modes are coming to the midseason, and they’re all bringing new and innovative twists to the current 5v5 format.
The first game mode is a variation of “Quick Play: Hacked” that lets players choose which roles get two heroes, Tanks included. Though the frontliners will receive nerfs to their HP, it’ll be interesting to see double-shield Tank comps make a comeback.
Speaking of empowered roles, the second game mode — nicknamed “Kingmaker” by the OW2 devs — bestows new and unique power-ups to the hero playing alone in their role. While this has some potential to breathe new life into the 5v5 format, we think it will present its own challenges, especially since it puts more pressure on a single person.
With all of that in mind, these playtests give new players a chance to experience the original 6v6 while also giving devs a benchmark for future improvements in role queue. We’ll be checking the meta as the new playtests drop, so make sure to check back with us for future updates!
