A technical art director at Virtuos recently updated their LinkedIn profile, sparking new Oblivion remake speculation after a former Virtuos employee claimed that the studio was working on the project in 2023. Moskovchenko has since removed the listing, but it was enough to spark speculation of an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake in development at the studio.Back in 2023, a user on Reddit claiming to be a former Virtuos employee said the studio was developing an Oblivion remake using Unreal Engine 5. The post has since been removed from the GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit, but the user claimed that Virtuos was developing the remake under the codename Altar, and that Unreal Engine 5 and the Oblivion engine would both be used via a “pairing system” (thanks, VGC).“For instance, new graphics are rendered in the Unreal Engine 5 project, but most of the gameplay, physics, etc are still done in [the] Oblivion [engine],” the user said. At the time, the user claimed that the remake was in development at Virtuos’ Paris studio, but they also weren’t sure if it would be a remake or remaster so it could have been early days for the project, which now might be in the hands of the Shanghai team.Fuel was thrown on the fire in 2023 when leaked court documents during Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard revealed a release schedule for Bethesda’s lineup. Alongside many titles we already knew about, the documents mentioned both The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3 remakes.There were also mentions of Dishonored 3, a project called Doom Year Zero, which we now know as Doom: The Dark Ages, and a “licensed IP game,” which is likely the upcoming Blade title from Arkane Studios.Bethesda hasn’t announced The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake, but there does seem to be a lot of smoke around this one.
