Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has announced that he wants to make another game, and it looks like it’ll be a spiritual sequel to the biggest sandbox game in the world. Persson asked his online followers what type of project they’d like to see next from him, and it already looks like a potential ‘Minecraft 2,’ which would likely share many of the original game’s ideas, is what fans want the most. Persson even says this hypothetical successor would avoid Microsoft’s “shitification” of the original.
On Wednesday January 1, 2025, Persson asked his 3.6 million Twitter/X followers what his next game should be. He describes the first choice as a “traditional roguelike” mixed with a “tile-based first-person dungeon crawler” in the vein of NetHack and Eye of the Beholder. This game also “feels like Stardew Valley, but [with] more diagonal door kicking.” As for the second option, Persson describes it as a “spiritual successor thing to Minecraft,” before putting both projects in a poll.
As of publication, ‘Minecraft 2’ is winning out with 77.9% of the vote, with over 235,000 people voting for the sandbox game successor so far. In a lengthy response to someone out of the loop on his initial announcement, Persson says he “basically announced Minecraft 2,” adding that he is “loving working on games again.”
“I don’t super duper care exactly which game I make first (or even if I make more), but I do know I’m making one, so I figured I’d absolutely be willing to give it an honest shot in the form of a spiritual successor to Minecraft and put up a poll about it.”
As for what this potential spiritual Minecraft sequel could look like, Persson adds that it won’t “sneakily infringe on the incredible work the Mojang team is doing and that Microsoft is successfully doing the Microsoft shitification about.”
Persson immediately follows up his comment about Microsoft’s handling of Minecraft with a more positive statement, so it’s unclear exactly what part of its handling of the original Minecraft he’s not on board with.
“And I respect them for doing that. It’s their job. And they, from what I understand, let the studio do things their way, which seems very fair to me.”
Persson also adds that simply making a ‘Minecraft 2’ would be “super illegal,” and that his spiritual sequel would be “a new original game of the same type as Minecraft and [called] something else.”
Persson started making Minecraft in 2009, with it almost instantly becoming a multimillion-dollar success story. By 2014, Persson sold his stake in his studio Mojang to Microsoft, with the Minecraft IP and Mojang purchased for $2.5 billion. Since then Mojang continues to update Minecraft, and the game has sold over 300 million copies as of its 15th anniversary.
