No Rest for the Wicked dev ditches publisher to avoid creative “restrictions”

No Rest for the Wicked is one of the most stunning and slick Diablo-like RPGs around, but its early access journey has been littered with pot holes – the biggest being the sale of Private Division, the Take-Two-owned label that was publishing the game. However, after a fairly long period of silence, Moon Studios (which has also created the beloved Ori games) has revealed two big bits of news – the first is that it has acquired the rights to No Rest of the Wicked and is now fully independent, and the second is that its new update will be “extra special” and its biggest yet.

While Take-Two’s sale of Private Division saw the rights to most of the label’s games passed along to its new buyer, it decided to hang on to No Rest for the Wicked. Now, in a new video update from Moon Studios, it’s revealed that the developer “saw an opportunity” following Private Division’s sale to become totally independent and gain full control over its new RPG. “We have secured the publishing rights for No Rest for the Wicked, allowing us to execute our vision without restrictions,” the studio says in a press release. In the video update, it acknowledges that the legal process to acquire the rights to the game has taken up a lot of time and resources, but now it is free and fully focused on No Rest for the Wicked.

Even more exciting for those currently playing the game is that its enormous The Breach update is now just a few weeks away. Moon Studios has changed its roadmap plans somewhat, bringing The Breach forward to launch before co-op support is added, but it assures that co-op will be the next thing to arrive in the game after this mega content drop.

The Breach will add the new areas Lowland Meadows and Marin Woods, expand the game’s story, and give you fresh enemies to fight as well. Gauntlets and wands join the RPG’s arsenal of weapon archetypes, so there are more combat opportunities for you to try out. The Alive system, which is No Rest for the Wicked’s key driver for replayability, has also been improved with more enemy factions able to take over different regions. Lots of quality of life updates and new systems are arriving too, such as improved item stacking, an “entirely overhauled” storage system, new fast travel options, and more.

Moon Studios also confirms that Gareth Coker, the original composer for the Ori series whose soundtracks for both Blind Forest and Will of the Wisps are highly revered, has been cooking up some new music that’ll arrive in The Breach update. “I’m happy to announce that I’ve been hard at work crafting an unforgettable score for the story, the characters, the locations, and the boss fights of No Rest for the Wicked,” he says. “And you will finally be able to hear some ambient music while out exploring in the world, too.”

The Breach update for No Rest for the Wicked will hit the game on Wednesday, April 30.
