With so many excellent survival games thriving, new entries in the genre need to set themselves apart. Stalwarts like Rust, DayZ, and Ark are all still immensely successful, making it harder for more recent games to find footing on platforms like Steam. This is exactly why the upcoming StarRupture, from developer Creepy Jar, is doing things differently. Not only does this sci-fi survival game blend the likes of Satisfactory and Starfield, but it also has one earth-shattering gameplay idea.
At its core, StarRupture is a co-op survival game. Either alone or with up to three friends, you’ve been sent to a faraway planet to fill out your prison sentence. You won’t be sitting in a cell, though, as you’ve got to build a factory to gather resources for some greedy futuristic megacorps. As with many games in the genre, there are myriad creatures to fight, buildings to erect, and resources to find – but StarRupture isn’t going to make it easy.
You and any other unlucky prisoners also have to contend with Ruptura, the planet’s star. This star heralds a constant cycle of life and death, putting the planet you reluctantly call home in a state of neverending rebirth. Every time the star ruptures your planet, new life emerges, with unearthed secrets and even more resources now ripe for the taking. Just make sure you’re not out in the open when you see a rupture’s wall of fire coming.
From here it’s up to you to mine for resources, set up automated factories, and defend yourself against the planet’s fauna. The automation heavily reminds me of games like Satisfactory, with the dense infrastructure ticking away right in front of your eyes. But there’s more to these factories than just building, as you’ll also need to set up defenses against all that wildlife. This part of StarRupture immediately makes me think of Starfield, as you come up against alien creatures on the planet’s surface, and need to use all the weapons at your disposal to take them out.
If you haven’t heard of Creepy Jar, the Polish studio has already made quite a name for itself in the survival genre. Its previous game, Green Hell, has garnered over 57,000 user reviews on Steam at an 86% positive rating, netting it the ‘very positive’ title. Green Hell is one of the biggest names in the wave of survival crafters of recent years, but Creepy Jar finally brought development to an end recently. Now, the studio is looking forward to StarRupture.
Creepy Jar confirms that StarRupture is coming to Steam Early Access in the fall of 2025. You can wishlist the game right here.
