New survival game Romestead is like a Stardew Valley town builder, with a twist

There’s something to be said for building your own society in a videogame. Starting from nothing, you place very shack, mine every resource, and come to know every citizen. I’m a real sucker for when this involves an awful lot of history, though, which is why Romestead has caught my attention. The survival town builder boasts cozy pixel art, Stardew Valley stylings, and even what looks like some Manor Lords strategy.

If you’re as big a fan of city-building and survival games as we are, Romestead is one to put on your radar. The upcoming top-down pixelated experience can be played alone or with friends, and thrusts you into the role of managing a thriving township. You’ll need to construct buildings, altars to the gods, and of course, roads to help your civilization thrive.

Romestead is filled with extensive town crafting, so if you’re a fan of city and society builders like Civilization, Frostpunk, and Manor Lords, you’ll find something to love here. You’ll also need to make sure your citizens are set to work, with jobs like crop farmers, weapon smithing, and resource collecting all integral to your survival.

There’s even an in-depth religion system, where the gods of the Roman pantheon like Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune can offer you much-needed upgrades. As you play you can gain Worship, a currency given after completing quests, pledging resources, and sacrificing citizens. You can then spend Worship on special technology, buildings, and upgrades to help you thrive. So don’t forget to thank a deity now and then.

When playing Romestead, you’re not confined to your growing society, either. The game has six biomes to explore, each with its own threats and discoveries to find. This means you’ll have to engage in tough tasks like dungeon crawling and boss fights, which you can prepare for at home by building fortifications and forging new weapons. Enemies will want to break down your front door, so be ready.
