Populus Run

Colourful food-based runner Populus Run has sprinted away from subscription services and made the move to Android along the way. This Fiftytwo title gives players control of a small crowd of people racing through a variety of levels, dodging fast food in the most literal sense.

A hardcore mode offers tougher challenges and multiple bosses to take on, and dropping the endless part from endless runners, levels do actually have a finishing line. Depending on the level, players might find a secret character, confront rapping bosses, or even navigate their crowd through waterpark-esque slides.

Populus Run’s expansion has made it available to all Apple and Android owners, with those who already played on Apple Arcade able to transfer over their progress and achievements. Fiftytwo has a free trial of the game on offer, but players must make a one-off payment for the full, ad-free experience.

Pocket Oasis

Knit’n’purl game studio has sprouted its first mobile game in Pocket Oasis, a tranquil title all about gardening. Its launch on iOS follows a Steam release earlier this year and gives mobile players a chance to cultivate their balcony gardens from anywhere – even their real garden!

The stress-free title tasks players with designing and nurturing a balcony full of fruits and veggies, with the weather, hours of sunlight plants receive and other factors playing into the experience – unique to a player’s in-game location, be it Zurich, Rome or Paris.

Knit’n’purl game studio has revamped this serene title with fresh controls and a new UI for mobile, naturally integrating touchscreen capabilities that the PC version lacked. The mobile expansion also happens to coincide with the ongoing Green Game Jam, focusing on food production and vegetarian alternatives.

Snaky Cat

Slithering exclusively onto Android, Snaky Cat has soft-launched this week with a limited number of spots available to players in the UK, Canada, Argentina, Australia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.

More than half a million people pre-registered for Appxplore’s cat-come-snake experience, eager to play as fluffy felines turned into suspiciously serpent-like creatures. Gameplay is built around the cats’ new form as players must navigate zones full of sweets, growing their long bodies with every mouthful and making traversal that much more challenging.

The goal is to grow as long as possible within the time limit while making sure not to collide with other cats – essentially a multiplayer take on the classic Snake, but with an all-important dose of cuteness.

Jenny LeClue

Narrative-driven mystery adventure Jenny LeClue is a coming-of-age 10-hour story sending the titular Jenny over late-night lakes, through abandoned mines and inside unusual libraries. She’s on a mission to prove her mother’s innocence in a murder case, and it’s the player’s mission to crack the case of the real culprit.

Specialising in storytelling, indie studio Mografi has crafted a tale with over 50,000 words of voice-acted dialogue over a mid-20th-century aesthetic, requiring sleuthing skills at every corner. A heap of intriguing, suspicious characters are to be found within, some of whom may help Jenny while others will take her astray from the truth.

It’s up to the player to choose the course of this story, guiding Jenny through a meta-narrative about family and identity. The title can be played on iOS for a one-time fee or with an Apple Arcade subscription.

Tiny Discs

Combining frisbee with golf mechanics into one casual sports title, Tiny Discs puts players’ hand-eye coordination to the test while aiming to land their frisbee in a basket in as few throws as possible.

Procedurally generated levels mean a new course is available every day, combining with daily challenges to encourage players to keep coming back for more – throwing themselves into a minimalist experience signature to developer Short Circuit Studio.

Together with the dev’s earlier titles Tiny Connections, Teeny Tiny Town and Teeny Tiny Trains, the new Tiny Discs is certainly reinforcing something of a trend.
